The wild horses in the protected area of Danube Delta are in danger.
Organizations for animal protection warn the authorities about the fact that, in Letea area, many locals catch horses to sell them to abattoirs.
About 100 hundred wild horses in the sand bank of Letea were captured by the locals in order to be sold for 100 lei to the abattoirs around the country.
People claimed their right as owners of these animals only after they had learned they would receive some money without thinking about the obligations imposed by the law.
Following the pressure of media and animal welfare associations, the local authorities have started an investigation in the area so that only healthy horses should be sold and those which have an owner, not wild horses in any case.
Sources in the area stated that this kind of deliveries are made periodically to reduce the number of wild horses that breed very fast and consume the cattle hay.
On the social network Facebook a group called ‘Do not let wild horses in Letea Forest, Tulcea, be butchered’ was set up to protect the horses in Danube Delta.
