The United States will temporarily deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor to Romania this summer, to provide defense while technical work is underway on the Aegis Ashore Ballistic Missile Defense site. System comes from the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in Fort Hood, Texas, "Stars and Stripes" and Military.com announce.
It is the first time since Russia's aggression against Ukraine, in 2014, when the system is being deployed across Europe.
THAAD system will only be deployed in Romania and will be commissioned by NATO’s Allied Air Command. It will replace NATO's Aegis Ashore system at Deveselu during its maintenance and component improvement process, as planned.
Aegis Ashore missile system installed at Deveselu Military Naval Base 99 will undergo a previously planned update process, in line with decisions taken at NATO level and with bilateral agreement between Romania and the United States of America.
"Development of the THAAD defensive system in Romania will be temporary, and it is planned to remain operational only until completion of the upgrade works of the Aegis Ashore Romania missile system", Romanian Ministry of National Defense (MApN) announces.
Update and deployment are expected to last several weeks, NATO said in a press release.
