At Cotroceni Palace, President Traian Băsescu discussed with the chief of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, about the low absorption of the European funds, Romania’s adherence to the Schengen Area and also about signing the Border Treaty with the Republic of Moldova.

Traian Băsescu declared that Jose Manuel Barroso had assured him that the community executive would place experts at the disposal of the Romanian Government in order to support the access to European funding.

‘President Barroso has assured us that it is the European Commission’s strong desire to place experts at the disposal of the Romanain Government in order to support the absorption of the European funds,’ President Traian Basescu announced.

The European Commission’s stand is clear: there is no link between the cooperation and control mechanism and the adherence to the Schengen Area, declared the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, following the conversations with Traian Băsescu.

‘This is an important stage, because in the Schengen system countries rely on mutual trust, therefore the countries in the Schengen Area must trust the judicial system of the other countries and this is the point of view expressed by the member countries.

Romania has to take action in this respect and to ensure these countries once again that everything has been done for the right implementation of the Schengen Agreement.

The Commission’s stand regarding this matter is very clear and lacks ambiguities,’ stated Jose Manuel Durao Barroso.

If all the measures are met, Romania should join the Schengen Area and there is no judicial link between the monitoring mechanism and the access to the Schengen Area, according to the President of the European Commission.
