Conflict over the Cemetery in Valea Uzului, Harghita, Romania, should be resolved diplomatically, Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, said on Monday in Arad. In this particular case, Hungarian authorities encourage negotiations between professional commissions, Minister Szijjártó added in a joint press conference with Kelemen Hunor, President of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR).
"We would like to see that the recent conflict in the Valea Uzului is resolved on a diplomatic, professional level and we encourage these negotiations and meetings to take place between the two professional commissions and that the Romanian Government should also contribute", said the Head of Hungarian Diplomacy, Péter Szijjártó.
In June this year, members of the Hungarian community in the region of Valea Uzului tried to prevent representatives of Romanian organizations from entering the Multinational Military Cemetery in Valea Uzului to commemorate their Romanian heroes. Although the Gendarmerie says that there were no violence between Romanians and Hungarians, the access gates of the Cemetery were destroyed and the police opened a criminal case. A joint delegation of Romanian and Hungarian experts will travel to Valea Uzului at the end of this month to carry out a research on the entire surface of the Heroes Cemetery and to discuss the possibility of taking over its administration by the Romanian Ministry of National Defense.
