Romanian Defense Minister, Mihai Fifor, was welcomed on Sunday, 29 April, by King Abdullah II of Jordan at the Royal Palace in Aqaba. The two discussed the international security environment, but also the intention to develop cooperation projects in areas of common interest.
Mihai Fifor also attended the Aqaba Meetings, a strategic dialogue platform, aimed at coordinating the actions of the international community in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
Meeting was co-chaired by Jordanian King and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kano, and the focus was on assessing the situation in Southeast Asia.
Mihai Fifor: "If last year I had an observer status, this year I have attended in my quality as a minister, because His Majesty, King Abdullah II bin al-Hussein of Jordan wanted Romania to participate at ministerial level, thus to show that Romania is enjoying an important status both in the North Atlantic Alliance and within the European Union.
We have discussed that too, the fact that NATO can and must be more involved in shaping these policies to combat the terrorist scourge. It was a very good discussion.
We also had new interventions on cyber security, but also on how Romania is an extremely important player in the Black Sea and about the challenges we have in the Black Sea".
