Over 46% of Romanians were present at the local elections yesterday.
Reporter: Cristina Grecu - According to the results, PSD won 20 local councils, PNL 17, and UDMR 4. The east and south of the country are dominated by PSD, and the west by PNL.
Regarding the mayoralties of the big cities, the capital was won by Nicusor Dan, who has a little over 42% of the votes compared to the 38 won by Gabriela Firea.
In Constanta, the mayor of PSD Decebal Fagadau lost by 24% in favor of the PNL representative, Vergil Chitac, who obtained over 28% of the votes. Ion Stelian Cristian, the USR representative, who was, according to the exit polls last night, on the same place with Vergil Chitac, now has second place, with a very small difference from Decebal Fagadau.
In Timisoara, the current mayor Nicolae Robu lost in favor of Dominic Fritz, the USR-PLUS candidate. Dominic Fritz: Timisoara wrote history again, Timisoara made a new revolution. The transition period of 30 years after the fall of communism ended with a final vote and it is an incredibly great honor that you elected me as your mayor, a man who came here for the first time in 2003, who did not speak a word in Romanian. For the first time, Romania elected a mayor who was not born in Romania.
Reporter: In Cluj Napoca, Emil Boc keeps his mandate.
In Sibiu, the positions of mayor and president of the County Council of the municipality were regained by those who have held them so far. The parallel count shows that Astrid Fodor, from the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, will continue to lead the City Hall, and Daniela Campean, from PNL, will continue to hold the presidency of the Sibiu County Council.
An unprecedented situation in the local elections was met in the commune of Deveselu in Olt County, where people elected as mayor the former mayor Ion Aliman, who recently died after being infected with the new coronavirus.
