Romanian Senate Speaker Călin Popescu Tăriceanu talked in Brussels with European Commission First Vice President Frans Timmermans about the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM), about the risks to democracy and violations of civil rights and freedoms arising from the Protocols between the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and judicial institutions in Romania.
President of the Romanian Senate presented the negative effects of these protocols, from the perspective of both hijacking the fight against corruption, and slippages in protecting citizens' rights and fundamental right to a fair trial.
Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu expressed confidence that there will be a public message that condemns these protocols, from the European Commission.
Head of the Senate also expressed concern about the refusal of President Klaus Iohannis to apply the recent decision of the Constitutional Court, which is, in his view, a negative signal in the support of the rule of law and the constitutional order.
