Life expectancy in Romania is among the lowest in the European Union and, although it has increased since 2000, it remains almost six years below the EU average.
High preventable mortality and high number of deaths from treatable causes indicate that the approach to risk factors needs to be improved and the efficiency of healthcare services should be increased.
In addition, underfunding of the system undermines Romania's ability to respond to the current needs of the population, according to a European Commission report published on Thursday.
