In Giurgiu county, the locals discovered, during the spring agricultural work, dozens of ammunition items, most likely from the Second World War.
The pyrotechnicians intervened urgently to raise them safely, but at the same time they also started preventive actions at the scrap metal collection centers.
Many unexploded ordnance objects are brought to the surface following agricultural works, says Nicoleta Beianu, spokesperson for the Giurgiu Emergency Situations Inspectorate.
Nicoleta Beianu: Usually, in spring and autumn, when agricultural work is carried out on the land and cleaning of gardens in households, the number of pyrotechnic interventions increases. 29 items of ammunition were discovered within Giurgiu County since the beginning of this year.
Most of the time, those who discover projectiles or other types of ammunition notify the authorities, but there can also be situations where they are not aware of the danger and will try to recover them at scrap metal collection centers.
That is precisely why the pyrotechnicians started information actions.
Nicoleta Beianu: We started a series of information actions at the level of these commercial companies that deal with the reception of scrap metal, their representatives being interested in finding out all the necessary information to know how they should behave near unexploded ammunition.
Moreover, only specialists can safely pick up, transport and destroy unexploded ordnance.
