Chairman of the Committee for European Affairs within the Low Chamber of the German Parliament, Gunther Krichbaum, has sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, requesting him not to suspend the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) for Romania and in case of further attacks on the independence of the Judiciary, to initiate the procedure for activating Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union.
While attending the Munich Security Conference, Gunther Krichbaum confirmed to Deutsche Welle that he had already sent the letter to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.
Kirchbaum sent a similar letter to Juncker earlier this month, and now he writes that the current internal political developments confirm his fears about the Judiciary in Romania.
Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union allows the Council to give a formal warning to any country accused of violating fundamental rights (7.1). If that doesn’t have the desired effect, Article 7.2 would impose sanctions and suspend voting rights.
