February 11 is the European Day of the emergency number 112. In Romania, the single national system for emergency calls, administered by the Special Telecommunications Service, was introduced in 2004.
"We are celebrating 16 years since the establishment of 112 Emergency Service in Romania. 16 years since millions of citizens call a single number when they need help. Operators of the Special Telecommunications Service took over 11 millions of calls last year. Call 112 only when you have a real emergency. Crews will reach you quickly if you have the Call 112 application installed on your phone. Operators of the Special Telecommunications Service take the calls from the citizens, carry out a primary interview, index the case according to typology and transfer it to either the fire department, the ambulance, the police or another intervention unit", said Major Cătălin Chirca, Spokesperson for the Special Telecommunications Service, in an interview for Radio Romania.
