The European Commission is continuing to work with the online platform TikTok to ensure that there will be no breaches of EU law during the country's presidential elections.
Recently, the EU executive and TikTok representatives tested how content is managed on the social network.
The European Commission says the TikTok social media platform has already made changes to the transparency of its online systems management and was open to working together to fix the problems that emerged last December.
The investigation by the European Commission and the Romanian authorities into the case is continuing, but Brussels gives assurances that TikTok has made additional preparations to better handle the May elections.
Thomas Regnier, European Commission spokesman on digital services: TikTok recently announced some changes to the way it analyzes the content of online posts. Romanian analysts working for TikTok will be more active on the upcoming elections. In parallel, the Commission continues its dialog with the platform and the Romanian authorities. A stress test has also been organized to check compliance with digital services legislation.
After last year's problems in Romania, concerns about possible interference have grown, especially in countries where elections are due in 2025, among them being Ireland, Germany and now Poland, where presidential elections are coming up. German authorities, for example, have asked all social media platforms to conduct tests to check how they handle online content.
According to the commission, the Polish authorities are taking a similar approach, and experts in Brussels are ready to respond to any request to ensure that EU laws on digital services are respected.
