Media representatives from organizations on four continents converse in Bucharest for two days on the challenges faced by broadcasting in the context of the ever growing domination of modern means of communication, such as the Internet and mobile telephony.
ABU, organizer of the conference alongside Radio Romania, is for the first time holding a meeting with European broadcasters outside its area.
The media landscape will change substantially by 2020, TV and radio content is more and more consumed on mobile phones, the Internet or hybrid platforms, said today, in the opening of the event, Ovidiu Miculescu, President and Director General of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation, convinced that this conference will increase knowledge with a view to adapting broadcasting to a constantly changing reality.
Ovidiu Miculescu: "The theme of this event reflects the growing recognition of the power of the media and the importance of providing accurate information for billions around the world. Over the next couple of days we have the possibility and the responsibility to prepare the landmarks of the near future".
ABU has an audience over four billion strong. The diversity of this continent forces broadcasters to act locally, but think globally, according to the opening speech of the head of this organization, Dr. Javad Mottaghi: "We are here to promote new initiatives, new co-productions, new partnerships that could bridge the gap between West and East. And we are here to look into the future."
One of the strong points that the media has is that of watchdog of democracy, Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu reiterated.
The media has to fight for the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The minister said about the role that Radio Romania plays in organizing in today’s event:
Bogdan Aurescu: "This shows the importance that Radio Romania has abroad, which means that the projects that Radio Romania has been promoting so far are successful, and I hope this continues to be so."
The debates at the Media 2020 Conference will be held in nine panels. We will present the conclusions of these talks in our future broadcasts.
