The Senate adopted, as the first chamber to be consulted, a legislative proposal to amend the law on the election of the President of Romania, which establishes that the elections must be organised at least 75 days before the expiry of the mandate of the incumbent President. The document was rejected by the specialised committees, but was not adopted by the plenary, and the bill was adopted in the form of the initiators.
USR Senator Simona Spataru: One proposal refers to a clear interval within which to organise elections for the president, because at the moment this interval does not exist, so that we could end up with elections organised just two weeks before the president's term of office expires. And a second strong point is, mirroring the provisions for the election of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, we propose to reduce the number of signatures required to take part in the elections. Fix the same mechanism for the parliament to apply to the elections for the President of Romania. At present, 100.000 signatures are required in parliament and 200.000 for the president. We propose to unify the thinking behind these two types of elections.
The legislative proposal will be debated by the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body in this case, notes editor Alexandra Cristea.
