The Port of Constanta ended last year with a new record for grain exports: 36 million tonnes, 50% more than in 2022.
The previous record for the quantities of grain shipped in a single year through the port of Constanta was just over 25 million tonnes.
The increase in the volume of grain shipped through the port of Constanta in 2023 was made possible by increased grain deliveries from Ukraine as well as European Union-funded infrastructure improvement projects, port authority officials told Reuters.
40% of the total 30 million tonnes of grain exported through Romania's main Black Sea port came from Ukraine.
Products from the neighbouring country arrive at the port by lorry on the railways or by barge on the Danube, and Constanta is now the most important export alternative for Kyiv.
