The National Audiovisual Council (CNA) announced on Friday that in the last 6 months it has issued 15 orders to remove illegal content from major social media platforms.
This content had a total of 25 million views on networks such as YouTube, Facebook and TikTok.
The Council explains in a statement that both European and national laws allow it to require online platforms to take action against illegal content by removing it online.
Illegal content refers to material that incites violence, has terrorism-related components, hate speech, incitement to discrimination, serious misinformation - with an impact on public safety - or exploitation of minors.
CNA points out that these decisions are not censorship, but action against material that violates the law and endangers public order, national security or citizens' fundamental rights.
