Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has been in Ruse, Bulgaria, on Friday, to attend an informal meeting with his Bulgarian and Austrian counterparts – the Presidents of the three European Union (EU) Member States that will successively hold the EU Council Presidency this year and in the first semester of 2019.
At the University of Ruse, that hosted the Conference "Sustainable Development of the Danube Region", the three Romanian, Bulgarian and Austrian Presidents addressed the few hundreds of young people present, highlighting two main themes: future of Europe and the European Danube Strategy.
President Iohannis spoke about implementation of values in the European architecture and stated that he strongly believes in democracy and the rule of law which, in his opinion, refers to justice based on the recognition of the supreme values of human rights, strong institutions and zero tolerance of corruption.
Romanian Head of State advocated for a European Union focused on unity, convergence, solidarity and equal treatment of Member States. On the other hand, he drew attention to the need for a review of the European Danube Strategy, which should become more visible to citizens and be centered on concrete projects.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev stressed too the need to pay close attention to the development of the Danube region, but also to the fact that Europe needs to respond to global challenges with global solutions.
President Klaus Iohannis has also scheduled a bilateral meeting with his Austrian counterpart.
