In the summer of 1875, a war against the Ottoman rule broke out in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One year later, Serbia and Montenegro declared war to Turkey and Bulgaria rose up too.

All the turmoil against the Ottoman people gave Russia the perfect opportunity to involve in the war, as it was very interested in the area; as a consequence, on 24 April, 1877, Russia declared war to Turkey.

Then, on 10 May, 1877, the Romanian Princedom which the Ottoman constitution considered its ‘privileged province’ declared its independence and trained 60,000 soldiers.

In an interview taken on 18 April, 1957 and quoted by the Rador (the Press Agency of the Romanian Radio), Matei Gheorghe, farmer in Fălticeni, told about the way Romanians had been training in order to fight for Romania’s independence.
