EU finance ministers are discussing today in Brussels important projects such as strengthening bank union or macroeconomic imbalances. It is the first meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) this year, chaired by the Romanian Minister of Public Finance Eugen Teodorovici.
RRA Correspondent Amalia Bojescu, reporting from Brussels: Romania has set out to work, during its EU Council Presidency, on important dossiers, first priority being to advance discussions on Economic and Monetary Union. Romania’s EU Council Presidency will also work on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) files and the upgrading of the VAT system. Minister of Public Finance, Eugen Teodorovici, said that Romania wanted to be efficient and pragmatic during the EU Presidency so as it can solve as many important files for all European citizens.
Minister Teodorovici: A very important topic is the InvestEU instrument /.../, a dossier where Romania will certainly bring its contribution based on the experience of past years. Also, supervision at European level, on what we will submit a proposal in the EU Council, a step-by-step approach, which is already discussed to go to the European Parliament and then as fast as possible to try to close discussion on the other aspects of the ESA package so that our ultimate goal can be reached.
RRA Correspondent: ECOFIN Ministers will review the ongoing negotiations to revise the existing architecture of financial welfare. Following the discussion, ECOFIN will have to decide whether the provisions in reference to strengthening supervision on combating money laundering and terrorist financing should be separated from those regarding revision of the European system. At the same time, ECOFIN Ministers must also approve a draft recommendation on the economic policies of the eurozone.
