Romania’s women’s national handball team defeated Olympic champion Russia on Sunday, 25 March, with a score of 26 to 25, in front of over 8,000 fans gathered inside the Polivalentă Hall in Cluj-Napoca, in the group qualifying fourth match for the 2018 European Championship. Romania, prepared by Spaniard Ambros Martin, took a revenge on Russia after having been defeated in Togliatti last Wednesday with 30 to 25.
Goalkeeper Denisa Dedu made a spectacular performance, also Eliza Buceschi (left-back) who scored the most, and Laura Chiper (right wing), Ana Maria Dragut (right back) and Cristina Neagu (left-back) who scored four times each.
After this victory at the limit, Romania is now the leader of the Group, with six points (119-96 goal difference), followed by Austria, six points (113-115), Russia, four points (112-103), and Portugal, no point (95-125).
In the first three games it played, Romania won over Austria (36 to 25) and Portugal (32 to 16), but then lost in front of Russia (25 to 30).
Romania’s women’s national handball team has two more games in the same group: with Austria (away, May 31) and Portugal (at home, June 3).
First two teams in each group will go to the European Championship in France (29 November-16 December 2018). Best-performing 3rd place team will also be playing at the final tournament.
