Romania's accession to the Schengen area should be discussed at the JHA Council on migration, in February 2023

The next opportunity for Romania's accession to the Schengen area to be put on the agenda of the Justice and Home Affairs Council is in February, at the European Council meeting on migration, government sources quoted by RRA reporter Alexandra Cristea said last night.
According to them, if the Swedish presidency will not accept, a decision regarding Romania's admission to the free movement area next year is unlikely.
The sources also claim that the strategy of the Justice and Home Affairs Council was not wrong, because Romania won the empathy and support of the other states of the union and was exposed to, let's say, "the hypocrisy of the Austrian state". If Romania had asked to postpone the vote, we would have been considered unprepared, government sources say.
