Romania has become a partner in the Transgreen project, a € 2,48 million funded initiative, aiming to develop, in the Carpathian area, a motorway and rail infrastructure with a low environmental impact, according to WWF-Romania, a partner organization within this initiative.
The Transgreen project officially started on 1 January 2017 and is to be completed on 30 June 2019.
"The development of the motorway and rail network connecting Romania's key points and, furthermore, Romania with the rest of Europe is an ongoing process.
The plans for the development of these types of large infrastructure foresee the crossing of the Carpathian Mountains and, implicitly, the fragmentation and disruption of valuable ecosystems included in protected natural areas, such as Natura 200 sites of European interest.
In order to prevent and diminish these pressures and threats to nature, the Transgreen project aims to develop solutions to help create a transport network with the least impact on the environment, a network that can be used safely in Romania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary ", mentions the environmental organization.
The Transgreen project benefits from a budget of approximately € 2.48 million, out of which € 2.109 million is a contribution from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Funding is done through the Danube Transnational Program (successor of the South-East Europe Trans-European Cooperation Program - SEE).
