Romania maintains its first position in the world regarding the efficiency of the two nuclear reactors of the Cernavoda plant.
The management of NuclearElectrica foresees the finalization of two more reactors with the same technology by 2031 and another six of smaller sizes by 2029. Bogdan Isopescu has details about NuclearElectrica's projects for the next eight years.
Romania remains at the top of the ranking of nuclear power plants both in terms of reactor efficiency and safety level.
The number one reactor put into operation 26 years ago ranks first in the world in terms of operating efficiency.
Due to its performance, NuclearElectrica will extend the life of the older of the two through a retrofitting operation that will start in 2026 and end in 2029.
Melania Amuza, Deputy General Director of NuclearElectrica: Our reactors at Cernavoda are in first and third place respectively in terms of capacity factor, which means an absolutely exceptional resource utilization efficiency in relation to energy production, and of course our standards of operation are recognized as being at the highest level in terms of the level of adherence to nuclear safety norms in Romania and worldwide.
Beyond upgrading the first unit, NuclearEectrica wants to build two more reactors with the same technology by 2031, and at last year's United Nations conference the US Foreign Trade Bank issued two letters of interest to finance the design phase.
A third major project is the commissioning, by 2029, of six small modular reactors with American technology similar to that used on US submarines.
They will bring an increase of about 460 megawatts installed, and the location is Doicesti, Dambovita county.
