The presidents of Romania and Bulgaria, Klaus Iohannis and Rumen Radev, discussed on the phone the accession of the two countries to the Schengen free movement area and how the deadlock recorded at the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs from last December can be overcome.
The Presidential Administration in Bucharest announced that the two presidents reconfirmed the firm determination of both parties to continue close cooperation in order to achieve the common goal of joining the Schengen area in 2023.
Also, according to the Cotroceni Palace, President Iohannis was called by his Austrian counterpart, Alexander van der Bellen, and after this discussion he decided to send Ambassador Emil Hurezeanu back to Vienna, who had been called to Bucharest for consultations on December 9, 2022, one day after after the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs, in which Austria opposed Romania's accession to the Schengen area.
