Remains of Queen Helen, mother of King Michael I of Romania, were repatriated from Switzerland to Romania on Friday, aboard a military plane of the Romanian Air Forces. Ceremony at the Otopeni International Airport has been attended by Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, Prince Radu, Princesses Sofia and Maria, Prime Minister- designate Ludovic Orban, acting Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă, US Ambassador to Bucharest Hans Klemm, political, administrative, religious, cultural and art personalities.
RRA Reporter Remus Rădulescu: On the way to Curtea de Argeș - where the remains will be re-buried on Saturday in the Royal Necropolis of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of Curtea de Argeş.- funeral procession with the coffin of Queen Mother Helen stopped for almost an hour at the Elizabeth Palace in Bucharest, the place where the queen left 71 years ago in exile, together with her son King Michael. If the king had the opportunity to see Romania after the fall of communism, his mother, Queen Mother Helen (Elena, in Romanian) has not step on Romanian territory since 1948. She died in 1982 and was buried in a cemetery in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Romanian Royal family led by Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, wanted to fulfill King Michael's wish and repair the injustice of history, by repatriating the remains of Queen Mother to be buried in the royal necropolis in Curtea de Argeş.
President Klaus Iohannis sent a message on the occasion of repatriation of Queen Mother Helen, stating that this is an act of historical justice, identity recovery and civic patriotism.
