RADIO ROMANIA NEWS - The new Chief of the Defence Staff, General Gheorghita Vlad, is in favour of amending the legislation to prepare the population in the event of a military conflict. However, Romanian politicians say that Romania is very well defended as a NATO ally and our country is not at risk of going to war.
With a summary of the statements of the last few days, Catalin Purcaru: "Senate President Nicolae Ciuca said that Romania has never benefited from stronger security guarantees than those we have today. Former prime minister and former defence minister Nicolae Ciuca, however, said that legislation on preparing the territory and the population for the country's defence needed to be updated.
Nicolae Ciuca: "We are, however, a country on the border of a conflict. We cannot sit idly by, and in this context we must take all measures and I assure you that, at this moment, all measures have been taken at the level of the Supreme Council of National Defence, at the level of the institutions, so that together with our allies we can face any challenge."
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Gheorghita Vlad, recently pointed out in an interview with Free Europe that the law on preparing the population for defence should be updated, and mentioned a draft submitted to Parliament. He stressed the importance of a resilient society by rebuilding the operational military reserve, developing the defence industry and continuing the army's armament programmes. Romania, as a NATO member state, benefits from the strongest security guarantees and there is no risk of being engaged in a war, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said.
Marcel Ciolacu: "Romania has never been more secure in this respect than today. The fact that we are part of NATO is a very important thing, and you can see the deployment of forces and soldiers from all over Europe, and especially from the United States of America, on Romanian territory. Let's be calm, Romania is not going to get into any war!"
Recently, several NATO and allied military officials have expressed concern about a possible expansion of the military conflict in Ukraine and have advocated the need to prepare the population and increase defence spending."
