The Ministry of Interior in Bucharest says that 2 nights ago the captain of a civilian ship outside the territorial waters of Romania, but in the exclusive economic zone of the country, about 55 kilometers from Sfantu Gheorghe, reported an explosion on board the ship.

The ship had left from the Ukrainian port of Cernomorsk and was on its way to Istanbul, but the captain asked to change the navigation route to Constanta in order to assess the effects of the explosion.

A Romanian Border Police vessel moved close to the civilian vessel, but the captain did not request assistance - the interior ministry statement added.

The clarifications were made after Ukrainian sources claimed that a civilian ship carrying wheat from Ukraine to Egypt was attacked in the Black Sea by a Russian missile.

The Ukrainians claimed that at the time of the attack the ship had left the countries' territorial waters and was very close to the mouth of the Danube in Romanian waters, but it was not clear whether they were referring to Romanian territorial waters or Romania's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
