Romania is determined to strengthen the partnership between the European Union and the UN during its presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of next year, President Klaus Iohannis said in New York, on September 26, during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.
President Iohannis expressed hope that Romania's evolution within the United Nations will convince world leaders to support Bucharest’s candidacy for a non-permanent membership mandate in the Security Council.
Romania is running for a non-permanent membership term in the Security Council for the period 2020-2021, a candidacy that involves assuming its responsibilities in an effort to increase the effectiveness of the Council, Romanian President said. Romania is determined to support the UN in its activities to promote peace and development for all its member states.
Foreign Minister Teodor Meleşcanu, who attended the UN session, said that Romania's slogan to promote its candidacy was "Peace, Justice, Development" and that he had several bilateral meetings in New York on this issue, according to RRA special envoy Oana Bâlă.
