Romania's Ambassador to the United States, George Maior, former Head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), has been subpoenaed to testify before the Section for Investigation of Criminal Offences in the Judiciary (SIIJ) in the file on extradition of former businessman Nicolae Popa from Indonesia, where former DNA Chief Prosecutor, Laura Codruţa Kövesi, is the defendant.
The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) has been involved in bringing Nicolae Popa from Indonesia to Romania, Ambassador Maior said after testifying, according to RRA Reporter Diana Surdu. Maior also said he was pleased to be heard as a witness in the file in which prosecutors want to find out the facts, the circumstances related to one of the most successful operations of the Romanian state in terms of combating a serious phenomenon that affected 300,000 citizens.
Other witnesses in this file so far have been former Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea and former SRI First-Deputy Florian Coldea. Former DNA Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruţa Kövesi is accused of abuse of office, bribe taking and false testimony over extradition to Romania of former Director of the bankrupt National Investment Fund (FNI), Nicolae Popa. Initially, former DNA Head was placed under judicial control, but she challenged the measure and now has no prohibition.
