Romania and Bulgaria should be admitted into the Schengen Area - European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said today in Strasbourg in his annual speech on the state of the Union.
He also spoke on the establishment of a pre-accession instrument for the euro, which would offer countries willing to join technical and financial support.
President Juncker also said in Strasbourg that he called on European Council President, Donald Tusk, to hold a special summit in Romania in Sibiu at the end of March 2019, when the United Kingdom would leave the European Union. From January 2019, Romania will hold the six-month presidency of the community forum.
Jean Claude Juncker: I call on President Tusk and Romania, who will chair the European Council during the first semester of 2019, to hold a special summit in Romania on 30 March 2019. My wish would be that this summit be held in the beautiful City of Sibiu, also known as Hermannstadt. We will meet here to take the decisions we need to build up a more united, stronger and democratic Europe. My hope is that on 30 March 2019 Europeans will find themselves in a Union where we will defend all the values, a Union in which all Member States will respect the rule of law, in which the Euro area, the Banking Union and the Schengen Area will become standards for everybody and each and every one of us.
