Decree signed by Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis - extending with one year mandate of the current Chief of Defense, General Nicolae Ciucă – has been published in the Official Gazette on Saturday, 29 December.
Head of State drew attention, on Friday, on the fact that any delay in publishing this decree in the Official Gazette would have serious consequences and would attract legal responsibility of all the persons involved.
At the end of the Friday meeting of Romania’s Supreme Defense Council (CSAT), President rejected Defense Minister’s proposal for a new Chief of Defense, considering that it did not abide by the law. Defense Minister Gabriel Leş had proposed General Dumitru Scarlat, Romania’s Representative to NATO and the European Union.
Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă argues, however, that according to the law, the President has no right to extend the mandate of the Chief of Defense.
