Consultations on the National Minorities Law in Ukraine

The representatives of Romania and Ukraine will launch a consultation process on the National Minorities Law in Ukraine, a recently adopted and promulgated document.
The foreign ministers of the two countries, Bogdan Aurescu and Dmitro Kuleba, discussed this topic by telephone, continuing the telephone conversation held by Presidents Klaus Iohannis and Volodimir Zelenski, on January 4, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest.
The new provisions generated the concern of the Romanian authorities and the representatives of the Romanian community in Ukraine, which was not consulted in the process of drawing up the adopted document in the absence of an opinion from the Venice Commission.
Even if the law represents an improved variant in relation to the previous projects analyzed at the level of the Ukrainian legislature, it does not guarantee, among other things, the right of the Romanian minority to education in the mother tongue.
