Romania's Constitutional Court has annulled the results of the first round of the presidential elections on the grounds that the electoral process was entirely flawed.
According to the CC, the free expression of the vote was violated by misinforming voters through a campaign in which the independent candidate Calin Georgescu, the winner of the first round of voting, benefited from an aggressive promotion, circumventing national electoral legislation, by abusing the algorithms of social media platforms and by not using specific election advertising signs.
According to the Court's decision, the electoral process will be restarted from scratch, with the government to decide on a date for a new vote early next year.
The Court's decision was based on Romanian intelligence reports, declassified by CSAT, according to which Calin Georgescu benefited from a foreign influence operation, in particular from Russia, to influence the outcome of the vote.
