Children of all ages will have the chance today to see what it's like to be a firefighter. The Bucharest fire brigade is celebrating the 180th anniversary of the service with an exhibition of firefighting equipment and a campaign to inform and train the public about first aid in the event of disasters and emergency interventions.
The events are taking place at the entrance to Carol Park and will end tonight with a torchlight retreat to Calea 13 Septembrie, at the ISU Bucharest-Ilfov headquarters.
On August 18, 1844, the first military fire brigade was established in Bucharest, called "Roata de Pompieri", at the proposal of Prince Gheorghe Dimitrie Bibescu.
The need for such a service was justified by the daily fires of those times, which resulted in significant damage.
The Bucharest-Ilfov "Dealul Spirii" Emergency Situations Inspectorate says it currently handles more than 20% of the total number of emergencies recorded nationwide.
