The European Public Prosecutor's Office headed by Laura Kovesi carried out a total of 2.666 investigations in 2024, according to the agency's annual report published on Monday.
These were tax fraud investigations targeting the EU budget and totaling €24.8 billion. The amounts involved are 22.5 more than those investigated in 2023, the document added.
Around €13 billion, or half of the total investigated last year, may be linked to cross-border VAT fraud and virtually always involves criminal organizations.
In a press release, chief European prosecutor Laura Kovesi urged the European Union to improve all the capabilities of the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
The institution also says that in 2024 it received around 6.500 complaints, of which more than 70 percent came from individuals and 27 percent from national authorities.
Only 1.7 percent of complaints were sent by EU institutions or agencies, the European Public Prosecutor's Office adds.
