Romania loses annually a number of people similar to the population of a city like Arad or Pitesti, say the representatives of the National Institute of Statistics (NIS).
Thus, on January 1, 2022, the resident population of Romania was approximately 19.038 million people.
There is a decrease of over 163.000 people compared to the beginning of last year, NIS figures show.
The main cause of this decrease is the negative natural increase, the number of deceased people significantly exceeding the number of live births.
The spokesperson of the NIS, Vladimir Alexandrescu: The resident population of Romania is in continuous decline, a decline determined both by the negative natural increase, for the most part, about 156.000 people was the level of 2021, and due to a negative external migration of 16.000 people. Regarding external migration, we see a moderation, but it continues to be negative.
Reporter: Due to the difference between the number of deaths and the number of births, which is, on average, more than 10.000 people per month, Romania loses practically every year a number of people similar to the population of a city the size of Arad, Bacau, Sibiu or Pitesti, says Vladimir Alexandrescu.
The NIS data also show that the demographic aging process has deepened, with Romania registering at the beginning of this year a number of 123.6 people over 64 years old for every 100 young people.
