EU ambassadors agreed on Friday, February 1, that UK citizens will get visa-free access to European Union, even in the case of a Brexit without an agreement.
Euronews reports that the proposal, made by the European Council, allows the British to access the Schengen area, consisting of 26 European countries, for journeys that can last up to 90 days. Council decision was submitted for approval to the European Parliament.
European Council explained that the visa waiver is granted "subject to reciprocity". "The UK Government has stated that it does not intend to require visas for European citizens traveling for a short stay in the UK. In the event that the UK will introduce visas for citizens from at least one EU Member State, the existing reciprocity mechanism will apply, the three European institutions and EU Member States will apply this mechanism without delay", European Council stresses.
