For the sake of unity among party members, the reformist clique has abandoned the idea of proposing its own candidate for the leadership of PDL.

Democrat Liberals will vote for only one candidate as the leader of the party given that at the soon to come PDL congress the leadership of the party will be claimed only by Vasile Blaga.
Democrat liberals are regrouping around Vasile Blaga who is expected to revive the party just as Traian Băsescu did in 2001.
Vasile Blaga, who is very well known for his organizing skills, says that he is aiming for the unity of the party, the dinamization of activities within its internal structure, the encouragement for internal dialogue between generations and the various opinions expressed within - and not outside of - PDL.
”I have decided to run for the presidency of the party because now more than ever it’s imperative for PDL to reorganize itself and live up to its role as the main party of the opposition.
I’m running because I want a PDL that is united, solidary, strong, and dedicated to the center-right values that it has adopted.
Now is the moment to establish unity and, most importantly, solidarity. Solidarity among party members, among territorial structures and the main central leadership and among the opposing fractions of the party” Vasile Blaga declared.
Vasile Blaga wants Gheorghe Flutur as general secretary of PDL, Monica Macovei and Cristian Preda in the party’s leading contingency.
He says that each of them will earn their offices in the election that will take place at the convention.
The reformist group withdrew its proposal for supporting one of its contingents for the presidency of PDL.
Moreover, the reforming clique has recalled its intention to issue a motion endorsing for one of its contingents for the leadership of PDL.
The reason for this decision, Sever Voinescu says, is a rather tactical one; it’s about the unity of PDL and it’s also based on several compatibility factors between the the clique’s motion and that of Vasile Blaga, one of these factors being the reinforcement of the party in its fight against its only political adversary—USL.
We simply believe that now is not the time for us to have confrontations in the Liberal Democratic Party (PDL) as Parliamentary elections are going to take place very soon.
Mister Blaga’s motion features several innovative measures for the party that are compatible with our vision, the most important thing for us is to continue to be a united political force that fights against USL and not self-destruct amidst internal animosities”, Sever Voinescu said.
As far as he’s concerned, the Liberal Democrat Sever Voinescu says that he has yet to reach a decision as to whether he will run for vice president. He has until the 27th of June to reach a decision in this regard.
The journalist Mircea Marian believes that the reforming clique has recanted its intention to issue a motion for the leadership of the party for reasons other than the compatibility between the two motions.
”Do you really think that anyone has actually bothered reading mister Blaga’s motion? It was his way of covering up for himself and explaining why the group supportive of Monica Macovei realized that she had no chance of winning and why its members had no option but to quit endorsing Vasile Blaga in hopes that they would obtain vice president positions or other offices in the future Permanent Committee” Mircea Marian said.
It is clear that for the moment, PDL won’t support anyone other than Vasile Blaga.
Mircea Marian tends to believe that it wasn’t to the advantage of the Liberal Democrats to start the internal fight for the leadership of the party and maybe this is why they decided to endorse the prospect of having only one candidate running for the presidency of PDL.
