USR and the Force of the Right submitted to the Constitutional Court a referral against the law that establishes some measures to combat tax evasion, including a prison sentence of one to five years or a fine for failure to withhold taxes or contributions.
They say that, in reality, the project decriminalizes tax evasion and invokes an article that states that people who cause damage between 100.000 euros and one million euros remain unpunished, if they return the money.
USR Deputy Stelian Ion, former Minister of Justice: It is, in fact, a law that does nothing but help the big evasionists in Romania. That is the main purpose. The second goal is to have leverage against businessmen, those who do fair business in Romania. They all risk having criminal records in this complicated system that PSD and PNL thought up.
According to the project adopted yesterday at the Chamber of Deputies regarding the fight against tax evasion, there is a possibility that the act will not be penalized if the damage does not exceed one million euros and the money is recovered, to which 15% of the value of this damage is added, plus interest and penalties.
