UDMR conditionally supports an administrative-territorial reorganization in Romania

UDMR (Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania) does not support an administrative-territorial reform in Romania that would change ethnic proportions without helping to improve the quality of public services, said the president of the Union, Kelemen Hunor.
In an interview given to the Hungarian press and quoted by MTI, the UDMR leader said that small villages cannot simply be abolished without taking into account their geographical characteristics.
Instead, the UDMR can discuss with coalition partners about administrative reform, reducing the number of councillors in smaller localities and transferring certain services, such as public procurement, Kelemen Hunor added.
His reaction follows the announcement by Social Democrat President Marcel Ciolacu that PSD will submit to Parliament a draft for the administrative-territorial reorganization of Romania, which would, among other things, provide for the merger of counties and the annexation of localities with less than 3.000 inhabitants to nearby municipalities.
