After extensive modernisation works, Tuzla airport has reopened. It has benefited from an infrastructure investment of almost 100 million lei, through a contract signed with the Ministry of Transport, and its operating capacity has increased.
Officially reopened with a public event, the "Alexandru Podgoreanu" International Airport benefits from a completely redesigned concrete surface with 26 parking spaces for aircraft and helicopters, seven taxiways, a video surveillance system and a new control tower.
Adrian Vasilache, the airport's commander: In the first phase, we hope to become a haven for small, private planes, which can come and fly from us both day and night. We're trying to connect as well as we can internally, with 20-seater planes. We have a project to hopefully implement it. The largest aircraft that can operate now is the ATR 42 - 42 passengers.
Tuzla Airport aims to attract new operators, to encourage short domestic and international routes and to make the coast more accessible and pleasant for Romanians in the west of the country.
Tuzla Airport belongs since 1999 to Regional Air Services, which also has its own fleet of airplanes and helicopters, simulators for various trainings, an aircraft engineering school and a pilot school.
