Marcel Ţundrea was convicted to 25 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping and killing a 13 year old girl from the village of Pojogeni, near Târgu Cărbuneşti, but he always claimed he was not guilty.
After 12 years of prison, during which the inmate had sent numerous petitions in which he pleaded not guilty and asked for another trial, forensics did DNA testing, proving that Marcel Ţundrea was not guilty of rape.
Considering the evidence, authorities decided to release the inmate in 2005.
"I am thinking, on the one hand that Marcel Ţundrea did spend a long time in prison, 12 years that is, but on the other hand that, during the investigation to find out the real perpetrator, we encountered many deficiencies in managing the evidence at the time."
"This is why we have decided to reopen the case and solve it, because, besides these aspects, we have also discovered an alarming thing: that Avram Gheorghe, the actual perpetrator, wasn’t even included on the suspect list", stated Marius Iacob.
The prosecutor said that all persons involved in the case would be interrogated anew.
Media overexposure "is not an image strategy"
In an interview for Radio România Actualităţi, Marius Iacob said that overexposing prosecutors to the media is not an image strategy to promote the institution.
He emphasized that, at the moment, his department collaborates best with the Romanian Intelligence Service, "a solid institution that gives useful information and offers technical and informational support".
He also added that that, although he collaborated poorly with the General Directorate for Intelligence and Internal Protection in 2009, he had a slightly better improvement for 2010.
