Romanian Government will amend Emergency Ordinance 7, which previously amended the Laws of Justice, but would only revoke the article stating that judges could become chief prosecutors, not the whole document, as President Klaus Iohannis and representatives of the magistrates had requested.
Justice Minister Tudorel Toader has made this announcement this evening, after the meeting that Prime Minister Dăncilă had at the Victoria Palace with representatives of prosecutors and judges.
Tudor Toader: "High-level prosecutors can only be those who meet the requirements of the law. Procedure - selection interview and proposal of Minister of Justice and appointment by the President of the Republic by presidential decree. Also implicitly revoked is provision that transfers jurisdiction of Prosecutors’ Section to plenary of Superior Council of Magistracy. Prosecutors who aspire to become high-ranked will be assessed at the Ministry of Justice. They will receive consultative opinion from SCM, from Prosecutor's Office, positive or negative, after which the Minister will suggest the President of the Republic to appoint high-level prosecutors".
