The anti-COVID-19 vaccine produced by the American company Pfizer greatly reduces the rate of coronavirus transmission, revealed two studies conducted in Israel.
The results of the study conducted by the Israeli Ministry of Health and Pfizer reveal that the vaccine developed by Pfizer in collaboration with the German company BioNTech reduces the infection rate, in asymptomatic cases by 89.4%, and in symptomatic cases by 93.7%.
The results of the pre-published study, which have not yet been evaluated by the second team but are based on a national database that is one of the most advanced in the world, were first reported by Israeli news site Ynet on Thursday night and were obtained by Reuters on Friday.
Pfizer declined to comment, and the Israeli health ministry did not respond to a request for comment.
The second study, conducted separately by Israel's Sheba Medical Center and published in the medical journal The Lancet on Friday, points out a 85% reduction in coronavirus transmission in symptomatic cases within 15-28 days of 7.214 members of the hospital's medical staff who received the first dose in January, with an overall 75% reduction in the infection rate, which also includes asymptomatic cases.
More research is needed to draw a definitive conclusion, but the two studies are among the first to suggest that the vaccine may not only prevent the disease, but may also stop the spread, Rador notes.
