Director: Nicoleta Turcu - The Senate and the Chamber of Deputies meet today in a joint sitting to adopt a political declaration on the situation in Ukraine. For more information, RRA editor accredited to the parliament, Amalia Bojescu.
Reporter: The statement was drafted by the foreign policy committees of the two Chambers, and the text was fully agreed on with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Romanian Parliament strongly condemns the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and demands the immediate, complete and unconditional cessation of the conflict, but also the withdrawal of all Russian forces. Russian aggression is throwing Europe into an era that should never have been experienced by current generations, according to the document, which considers this act of aggression to be a flagrant and serious violation of the principles of international law. The Romanian Parliament considers that the Russian Federation must bear the consequences of this act, one which is deeply illegal, and calls on the President and the Government to support in international fora the adoption of sanctions with a major impact on the Russian Federation.
The Romanian Parliament also reaffirms its full solidarity with Ukraine, its strong support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its support for its European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. The document also shows that members of the Romanian community in Ukraine contribute to the richness and diversity of Ukrainian society and represent a bridge between the two countries. Also, the members of the Romanian ethnic community have been, and are, loyal and faithful citizens of Ukraine, who understand their obligations under this statute, but, at the same time, have natural and legitimate expectations that their rights will be fully respected, states in the declaration that will be adopted at the joint meeting scheduled for 16:00. The statement will be widely read in plenary and no interventions by parliamentary groups are foreseen. And, as a symbolic gesture of support for Ukraine, the facade of the parliament, from Constitution Square, will be illuminated in blue and yellow.
