RADIO ROMANIA NEWS - Today, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, visited Bucharest for the first time since her country received the status of candidate for accession to the European Union, for which it was supported by Romania.

After the discussions at the Cotroceni Palace with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, Mrs. Sandu said that the Republic of Moldova wants to buy natural gas from Romania as soon as possible.

Catalin Purcaru followed the statements of the two presidents: "President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that Romania is consolidating itself as the first commercial partner of the neighboring state and showed the role of the gas pipeline Iasi - Ungheni - Chisinau as an element of energy security of the Republic of Moldova.

Klaus Iohannis: "In addition to connecting the Republic of Moldova to the European electricity grid, in March, the interconnection of the electricity grids in Romania and the Republic of Moldova has an obvious strategic relevance, and we agreed to take decisive steps in this direction."

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, declared that the war started by the Russian Federation threw the region into uncertainty. She drew attention to the fact that the effects can be seen on the energy market, where the Republic of Moldova pays twice as much as Romanian consumers.

Maia Sandu: "We want to buy gas from Romania and we need this as soon as possible. This is critical to ensure that our people do not freeze in the winter and to maintain social stability in the country."

Maia Sandu also stated that the Republic of Moldova is worried about its security, and the institutions are carefully following the evolution of the situation in the Transnistrian region. The President of the Republic of Moldova also met with Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, at the Victoria Palace. Discussions focused on the regional security situation and the outlook for the impact of the conflict in Ukraine on the population, possible waves of refugees, political stability, inflation and future economic costs driven by energy prices."
