Reunited in an extraordinary session, the Parliament declared vacant, with the majority of votes of senators and deputies, the position of director of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI). The parliamentary group of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) voted against.
George Simion, AUR leader: We voted against to show our disapproval of this form of defection in the middle of a complicated geopolitical summer. Mr. Hellvig should have had the decency to write that he was resigning.
The former director of SRI, Eduard Hellvig, recently resigned from his position. He stated that after an eight-year mandate at the head of the institution, he achieved his goals. The interim is currently provided by his first deputy, general Razvan Ionescu.
In a statement sent on Monday, the president of the Commission for SRI control, Cristian Chirtes, appreciated that the Romanian Intelligence Service evolved under the mandate of director Eduard Hellvig into an institution consolidated on democratic values, whose activity is carried out by professionals dedicated to fulfilling their missions.
