The organization of the referendum in the capital at the same time as the presidential elections is facing organizational and legal difficulties, said the president of the Permanent Electoral Authority, Toni Grebla. He explained that the laws on the organization of the two events are not harmonized and contain partly contradictory elements. He gave the example of the different times for the referendum and the elections. Mr. Grebla also noted that the law on referendums has been amended, but has not yet entered into force.
Toni Grebla: "There is a discrepancy in the harmonization of the two laws: the law for the election of the President of Romania provides for the possibility of voting between 7:00 and 21:00, while the referendum law provides for the possibility that citizens participating in the referendum must vote between 7:00 and 23:00."
On October 21, the General Council of the Capital approved the organization of a local referendum simultaneously with the presidential elections. Bucharest's citizens will be invited to answer three questions related to the way money is shared between the General City Hall and the sector mayors' offices, the issuing of building permits in the capital and the fight against drug use in schools.
