The Ministry of the Environment will prevent all works on the Bastroe Canal that may affect the biodiversity and the ecosystem of the Danube Delta, given that neither the national legislation of Romania nor the Ukrainian legislation allow the carrying out of works in that area, says the Minister of the Environment, Tanczos Barna.
The clarifications were made after the Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, declared that there are signals that Ukraine is currently dredging the Bastroe Canal, which could have an impact on the environment and the Danube Delta.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified that it had not received any information from any Romanian authority, according to which, at the moment, deepening works would be carried out on the Bastroe canal and reiterated Romania's position, which does not agree with the proposal for the inclusion of the Chilia and Bastroe arms in the trans-European transport network.
