Russia is solely responsible for the war in Ukraine, which represents "a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter", the foreign ministers of the NATO member states said in the joint statement signed at the meeting in Bucharest.
NATO foreign ministers pledged at the meeting in Bucharest to step up their support for Ukraine and help restore its energy infrastructure.
They called Russia's aggression in the neighboring country a flagrant violation of international law, and pointed out that it had affected the world's food supply and put the most vulnerable countries at risk. With details Amalia Bojescu:
The adopted statement said Russia's unacceptable actions, including hybrid activities, energy blackmail and nuclear rhetoric, undermine the rules-based international order. The Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, declared that the focus must now be on helping Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Jens Stoltenberg: Here in Bucharest, NATO members expressed strong support for Ukraine. We will continue to support Ukraine, although we oppose the war, but we will support it as long as it is needed. Allies have provided unprecedented support, and all countries are committed today to continuing these efforts.
The ministers also reaffirmed the strategic importance of the Black Sea for the Alliance and the commitment to defend every centimeter of allied territory.
Any attack against the allies will be met with a solid and determined response, the joint statement adopted by the foreign ministers of the NATO countries also states.
